Evans Engineering & Power Company

"Waterpower has been used for thousands of years, and for the last 200 years. The Evans Family' have been building water-pumps of all shapes and sizes to move it, and for the last 35 years I have been designing and building water small water turbines to extract the power from it. The ever-increasing price of oil and growing concern about the future of our planet are now allowing us to pass on our years of experience while working on environment friendly projects in Britain and around the World.

Our main objective during the last thirty-five years, has been to promote the practical use of small scale waterpower (micro-hydro) as one of the environmentally compatible technologies that offer an alternative to nuclear power, and to promote rural development programs, which include training, and consultancy, and are becoming an increasingly important part of our work. Our experience is based the design of almost 1000 small hydro schemes and on the design and manufacture of over a hundred turbines for projects around the World.

From 'Mill Stream' to 'Mountain Stream' we have captured energy, and from a few watts to almost 1 megawatt of output, for rice milling in India to farms in Scotland. Rather than produce a few standardised turbine that do not make full use of any site, we have developed a modular system where three quarters of a plant is made up from stock components and the remainder is tailored to the exact requirement. This gives you maximum output and efficiency but at a price that is no more than the mass-produced agricultural items that are finding their way into market place." ... more

Hydrovolts

"Hydrovolts' new hydropower technology taps a plentiful but overlooked source of renewable energy from water currents in canals and channels around the world. Hydrovolts turbines generate reliable, local clean power, economical and easy, in millions of locations around the world. You'll never look at water the same way again.

Hydrovolts turbines boast several technological innovations that make our turbines the cost-effective answer for your hydrokinetic power needs. Our products pay for themselves in five years or less in appropriate sites, because of the following innovative features:

  - Efficient Design
  - Switchblade Enabled
  - Flipwing Rotor
  - Easy Installation

Switchblade Enabled
Modular generator endcaps let you switch rotor blades to customize the turbine to take advantage of your site's flow characteristics. Unlike other micro-turbines, our generator frame design is specifically engineered to easily accommodate different types of rotor blades, allowing us to choose the blade that optimizes the amount of power at an individual site.

Flipwing Rotor
The Patent-Pending Flipwing Rotor is a breakthrough in mechanical innovation for hydropower generation. The hinged blades or paddles are pushed by the current against the center shaft driving the rotation. As the blades begin their reverse upstream stroke they flip open backwards and present only their edge to the current. This eliminates almost all resistance and provides a pressure differential across the axis of about 95%." ... more

Ossberger

"Hydro power - to produce electricity from water, gaining an environmentally friendly energy from a permanently renewable source, has been our motivating force since more than 100 years. Small water plants must meet the natural conditions and the various operating tasks. For this reason we are building tailor-made hydro power stations.

Small hydro power stations

To reach this goal special solutions have been developed for your hydro engine:

  - Original OSSBERGER Cross-Flow Turbines intended for asynchronous or synchronous power stations: The cross-flow turbine is a hydro engine, developed by the Australian Michell, the Hungarian Banki and the German Ossberger. Ossberger made a serial product of this turbine type. Belonging to the free-jet or impulse type, it is mostly built as a two-cell draft tube turbine. Just in the case of small run-of-the-river stations its flat efficiency curve renders a higher annual performance than other turbine systems.

MJ2 Very Low Head Turbine

"The project of developing a new hydroelectric turbine concept designed for the harnessing of very low water heads (net head height ranging between 1.4 and 2.8 m) originates from a fact established by a team of small hydro professionals.

There are up to now no equipments enabling making hydroelectric sites with a head lower than 2 m acceptably profitable, in the economical context of developed countries. Technically, existing technologies are available, but their implementation implies such civil engineering costs that they make the global investment too heavy.

As the outcome of many years of experience in the design of low-head turbines, a French patent application has been filed for the VLH turbogenerator unit in 2003. This patent has been given an international extension in 2006. In April 2004, MJ2 technologies S.A.R.L has been created to develop the new concept, find financings, carry out the R&D scientific program and the obtaining of the first prototype and the industrial launching.

In 2004 and 2005, the preliminary studies have been completed. In 2006, laboratory tests on small scale models have validated the concept and confirmed the technical performances. The first demonstration site, the administrative concession of which has been obtained in 10 months, is under construction. The manufacturing of the first industrial prototype is launched for a commissioning due for the end of 2006.

On March 19, 2007, the VLH unit has delivered its first kWs to the public network on our Millau demonstration site. This date marks the end of the first R&D phase of the project and the beginning of the industrialization of the VLH concept." ... more

The Vortex Hydro Energy

"Vortex Hydro Energy has exclusive license to commercialize a University of Michigan patented, hydrokinetic power generating device, the VIVACE converter, which harnesses hydrokinetic energy of river and ocean currents. This converter is unlike water turbines as it does not use propellers. VIVACE uses the physical phenomenon of vortex induced vibration in which water current flows around cylinders inducing transverse motion. The energy contained in the movement of the cylinder is then converted to electricity.

The VIVACE converter is a transformational technology. It taps into a vast new source of clean and renewable energy, that of water currents as slow as 2 to 4 knots previously off limits to conventional turbine technology that target rivers with water currents greater than 4 knots. The vast majority of river/ocean currents in the United States are slower than 3 knots." ... more

Lucid Energy

"Water flows through LucidPipe's lift-based turbine, generating power as the turbine spins. The hydrodynamic turbine has been carefully designed and lab tested to maximize efficiency and power generation while limiting the onset of cavitation. As velocities increase, power production increases. Due to the lift-based design of the LucidPipe turbine, the system generates power across a very wide range of velocities.

LucidPipe extracts very little head pressure per turbine, often 1-5 PSI. This unique feature allows the modular LucidPipe system to be placed in series, while allowing for uninterrupted water flow. LucidPipe does not need to be placed in a pressure transient zone or where extreme differential pressures are needed.

Many in-conduit hydropower systems are designed to replace pressure reduction valves (PRVs) in small-diameter pipelines < 16 inches. LucidPipe operates works in conjunction with valves in large-diameter pipelines ranging from 24 - 96 inches. Using LucidPipe and valves together actually increases the useful life of valves, while simultaneously reducing energy costs.

LucidPipe is designed to minimize any impact on water operations. It can be configured to efficiently generate electricity within a wide range of pipe diameters, head pressures and water velocities. LucidPipe's arrives mounted inside a pipe section. The pipe section is installed directly into the water transmission pipeline in a day and grid connected within a week. Because its patented lift-turbine design does not extract as much pressure as other technologies LucidPipe can be placed throughout a pipeline system in series without disrupting water delivery. In low-flow conditions, LucidPipe can be deactivated and have virtually no impact on pipeline efficiency." ... more

Gorlov Helical Turbine

"Inexhaustible energy from flowing water created by:

  - Rivers
  - Small dams built for flood control or recreation
  - Tidal currents
  - Ocean currents
  - Discharge from conventional hydro-power dams
  - Discharge from industrial plants

A totally non-polluting process

The Gorlov Helical Turbine (GHT) was specifically designed for hydroelectric applications in free flowing low head water courses. The following benefits make the GHT especially valuable for generating hydroelectric power:

  - Demonstrates superior power efficiency in free currents compared to other known turbines
  - Rotates at twice the velocity of the water current flow.
  - Self-starting in water current flows as low as two ft/s
  - Rotates in the same direction, independent of water flow direction. This is especially advantageous for tidal and wave energy systems.
  - No fluctuation in torque
  - No cavitation even at high rotating speeds
  - Allows construction of environmentally benign hydropower plants without dams
  - Modular-can be assembled vertically, horizontally or in any other cross-flow combination using a common shaft and generator for an array of multiple turbines." ... more

"SMALL HYDRO STREAM" Hydrokinetic Generators are complete hydropower systems. Turbines and Generators are integrated into a single unit t hat provides power in rated capacities of 500W to 10KW. Larger capacity generation can be customized.

"SMALL HYDRO STREAM" Generators compare favorably to other very low head technologies and do not require custom site construction. STREAM generators are designed to install directly into the built environment.

The STREAM turbine enclosure channels and accelerates water current to strike only the leading edges of the dual axis turbines, reducing friction and turbulence. Accelerating gears multiply rotation speed to the generators. These innovations yield hydropower in low head conditions without the need for dam or penstock construction.

"Water is led to the rotation basin. Passing the central draining outlet in the middle of the basin's bottom, it is set in a rotary motion. A slowly turning rotor with approximately 20 turns per minute is moved with the aid of gravity and altitude difference. This rotor drives the generator that produces natural electricity and delivers it into the elctricity network.

The functional principle can be applied from a fall height of 0.7 m and an average amount of water of 1,000 liters per second. Therefore, it is very well suited for the usage of a small hydro. Slowly turning rotors that are permeable for flotsam up to 1.5 m length and 7.5 inches diameter are used.

There is no attrition because of cavitation as there is no big pressure difference in the area of the turbine. The technical equipment is a lot simpler than what traditional gravitation water vortex power plants have. Therefore, the maintenance and service costs are lower." ... more
